Who's not familiar with peplum? The type of blouses or dress that took over the world during my high school years are slowly creeping their way back to the fashion trend. With a modern touch, today's peplum silhouettes are subtly graced over tops and of course dresses with a less-flowy and less-romantic approach.
The year of 2010s was the year of the flared-fabric on the waist of a garment. Peplum adornments color both the runways or the red carpets, from Jil Sander's spring 2011 show to Alexander McQueen's spring 2012 collections. The look further gained its popularity when it was seen on icons like Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, and Nicole Kidman on various red carpets.
However, there's been a dramatic decline in the interest in peplum since the mid 2010s. So to see the silhouette back again on the streets and on red carpets is quite the surprise! Sydney Sweeney was seen rocking a vintage Mugler dress at the HCA TV Awards in August, Irina Shayk looks beguiling in a brown sequin peplum dress, or even the Princess of Wales herself, Kate Middleton who sported wearing the model several times; a navy polka dot casual peplum dress at the Wimbledon Men's Final, to an electric blue lace formal peplum dress during her royal duty in Belize. We've noticed several spring runways who had shown new styles in stiffer fabrications of the silhouette too, such as Givenchy and Dior.
The new approach to peplums feel less over-the-top than its first 'generation'. They left the dramatic flare touch intact in a subtler and sweeter manner for you to fall in love with it all over again.
