The Academy Awards, widely known as the Oscar is an awarding ceremony event for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. This prestigious award is, of course, attended by many reputable actors, actresses, and other parties involved in the film industry. Her arrival on the red carpet of Oscar managed to gain the attention of the media with her floral-patterned white dress with a tight belt that showed off her very slim waistline. Designed by her best friend, Hubert de Givenchy, the dress featured a bateau or boat neckline, which was considered unusual for an Oscar dress at that time. The 26th Oscar for The Academy Awards marked the first time for the public to see Givenchy's masterpiece, where she wore a belted white floral dress.

Bob Mackie defended his design after receiving feedback from people who said Cher's dresses he designed weren't fashion with, "Of course, it's not fashion. It's a crazy getup for attention." The dress was alleged to be her revenge dress for getting snubbed at the Oscars that she didn't get nominated for starring in Peter Bogdanovich's film Mask, playing the mother of a disfigured teenager. She showed up in the 58th Academy Awards with a towering feathered headdress, midriff bare, both the top and bottom accentuated by triangular hems, like teeth chomping on her stomach.

Madonna made history by channeling Marilyn Monroe at the 1991 63rd Academy Awards. With Michael Jackson in hand, she sparked rumors of a potential relationship with the King of Pop. The mesh embroidered top with deep-red floor-grazing gown was cited by Cosmopolitan as one of the Best Oscar dresses of all time.
