Y2K itself is an abbreviation from the Year 2000, named after the bug in computer programmings that were potentially reported can cause havoc when dealing with dates beyond December 31, 1999. Until the 1990s, computer programs were designed to abbreviate years as two digits code to save memory space. For instance, computers could recognize "98" as the year 1998. However, as the year 2000 approached, many believed that the system would encounter a problem interpreting the "00" code as a new year-you knew the year 2000 instead of 1900.
