It's confirmed; the queen is back! Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, Queen of Genovia in The Princess Diaries 3! Not only that, the new installment of the iconic chick flick is going to be directed by Crazy Rich Asians' director Adele Lim.
Announcing the big news, the 41-year-old actress shared a new TikTok where she held up one finger before cutting to her iconic "Shut up" line from the 2001 film. She then held up two fingers, followed by a clip of her co-star Julie Andrews repeating the line from the 2004 sequel, before transitioning to a news report revealing that Crazy Rich Asians director Adele Lim has joined the project.
"Miracles happen. Back to Genovia," Hathaway captioned the video.
Adele Lim, best known for penning the mega-hit movie Crazy Rich Asians, shared her excitement of her involvement in the third franchise. "As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I'm beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," Lim said, quoted from Deadline. "We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide."
Crazy Rich Asians grossed $174 million domestically for Warner Bros. and became one of the most profitable romantic comedies of all time. It received best picture nominations at the Golden Globes and Producers Guild Awards, and won the Critics' Choice Award. She then wrote Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon, which received an Oscar nomination for best animated feature.
Additionally, The Princess Diaries 3 will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who launched the film franchise that starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, the relatable teen who becomes queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia, and Julie Andrews as her royal grandmother. Naia Cucukov, Lim's producing partner at 100 Tigers, will serve as executive producer alongside Melissa Stack, while Hathaway will produce under her Somewhere Pictures banner.
Flora Greeson is writing the script. Although plot details are still under wraps, the third installment is expected to continue the story from 2001's The Princess Diaries and the 2004 sequel Royal Engagement, rather than rebooting the series.
Now, all we need is for Chris Pine to return as Prince Nicholas Deveraux to join Anne Hathaway for a bit of romance in Genovia.
