Thriller movies are exciting because everyone would be interested in, well, the thrill. But a thriller movie combined with mystery? It's totally my cup of tea. With these movies, your eyes need to be glued to the screen so you don't miss any 'clues' or a puzzle piece to figure out what's actually happening. It's like playing a guessing game, but you won't even be ready for the twists and turns when it reaches the end that's what makes it so intriguing to watch! Hence, here are some recommendations of must-watch psychological thriller movies curated by yours truly.
Fight Club/ Foto: IMDb |
Fight Club by David Fincher (1999)
The first rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club but sorry, I'm going to break that rule. Young Brad Pitt oh, I'm so in love! Apart from him, the movie's setting is unique; it tells about an insomniac who forms an underground fight club along with a soap salesman. The plot is so well paced until it unravels something sinister. It is a movie worth revisiting again and again, even if you already know the twist.
The Forbidden Door/ Foto: IMDb |
The Forbidden Door by Joko Anwar (2009)
The film is suffused with disturbing imagery and covers the concept of voyeurism pretty well. Although I have to admit, the first 30 minutes feel draggy and laughable. The story really only starts to unfold for at least an hour. But its bleak atmosphere and settings make this movie worth the time. And what's a Joko Anwar movie without a great amount of gore? I think the character's personality flip is also something I didn't look forward to.
Shutter Island/ Foto: IMDb |
Shutter Island by Martin Scorcese (2010)
Shutter Island is a classic psychological thriller movie that I can't resist adding into the list. It may seem boring at first as it will leave you yawning (I've been there), but it gets better with time. The story resides on two US marshals who are sent to an asylum on a small island to investigate the disappearance of a patient. But of course, things don't go smoothly as planned once they discover something. The movie starts off so mysterious and sinister, and throughout the movie, you'll feel you're actually going insane along with the main character. But it all unravels perfectly at the end. And the plus point, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo who gave an exceptional performance!
Memoir of Murderer/ Foto: IMDb |
Memoir of A Murderer by Won Shin-yun (2017)
You wish you know the truth, but you don't Memoir of A Murderer is a perfect mystery thriller that will leave you questioning everything. It is a story about a former serial killer who suffers from Alzheimer's and is incredibly concerned with his daughter's new boyfriend who he senses might be a serial killer as well. The movie is so well-executed to the point it will leave you wondering if the boyfriend was really a killer, or if the father's memories were altered due to his dementia. It will just keep you guessing and guessing down to the last minute of the movie.
The Platform/ Foto: IMDb |
The Platform by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia (2019)
In The Platform, prisoners are put in vertical cells with a number on the wall indicating the floor they are currently placed at. Then, a large rectangular elevator shaft full of food will be served from the top of the floor down to the bottom. Here, prisoners can eat whatever is served in front of them. But, the lower they are placed, the less food is available for them to eat because it had been devoured by the prisoners who lived upstairs. Uniquely, they will be randomly assigned to a new floor at the start of each month. It's a movie about survival that displays ego, capitalism, and humanity. Truly disturbing, but still full of mysteries. I keep wondering and constructing a theory of my own about what truly happens down there.
Since this genre is my favorite, I still have a bunch of recommendations left. But in the meantime, let's leave it at that. Happy watching!
